About the artist
This work was done in honor of Mohamed Younes Idress, a high jumper from Sudan who was unable to compete in the 2016 Summer Olympic Games held in Rio de Janeiro. Here, he is depicted soaring over a 25 story building in the Barra area of Rio. The effect is stunning as Mohamed suddenly hurrels himself over the massive building.
In this work, JR has utilized photography printed on giant sheets of fabric which were placed on a scaffold atop the building giving the illusion of a man crashing over the top. This photographic view of the installation is particularly desirable as it also displays The Christ in the background gives balance to the work and instantly situates itself in the city of Rio.
This is the work of French artist, JR, as one of his GIANTS series. JR began his artistic career as a graffiti tagger in Paris. He has now become an internationally known photographer through the massive projects that he has done throughout the world. Many of his works highlight political and social issues of the day, often calling out governments for the treatment of their marginalized citizens. JR was the winner of the 2011 TED prize, has been nominated for an Oscar, has been featured in an Anderson Cooper program, among other highlights in his career. Recently, JR has collaborated on a film with Agnes Varda entitled Faces Places. The film is rather a travelogue of rural France featuring conversations between the two, fleshed out by huge photographs of the local townspeople taken by JR. These photos are then placed on the sides of barns, factories and other local buildings. The effect is stunning and fascinating. Lastly, JR was recently featured at the Brooklyn Museum with an exhibit entitled: JR:Chronicles. JR is an international sensation.
